Waterproofing membranes for roofing, underoud constructions, pond liners and photovoltaics

Best thermal insulation and waterproofing system

    FatrafolRoofing waterproofing systems

The FATRAROOF THERMO waterproofing system is a comprehensive solution for both flat and sloping single-ply roof structures with the standard arrangement of thermal insulation and vapour control layers. In addition to the waterproofing membrane, the complete sandwich solution also includes a thermal insulation layer made of polystyrene or mineral wool.

    Thermal insulation for flat roofs

Thermal insulation is to protect building interiors against thermal losses in winter and overheating in summer. Thermal and technical properties of structures and buildings have a major impact on human thermal comfort. Energy consumption depends on the interior conditions required to achieve human thermal comfort.

    Energy aspects of flat roofs

Energy consumption for heating in winter and air-conditioning in summer depends on the thermal and technical properties of the structures. Effective thermal insulation combined with a high-quality ‘building envelope’, which also includes the roof deck, may significantly cut energy consumption of buildings.

Higher energy prices and an increasing emphasis on climate protection against CO2 emissions place ever-growing demands on reducing the energy consumption of a building. In addition, more strict requirements apply to a building’s energy consumption.

Both compositions certified within the system were assessed by the Prague-based Centrum stavebního inženýrství a.s. (Civil Engineering Centre) in accordance with valid legislation, in particular the Czech State Standard CSN 73 0540-4/2007, Thermal protection of buildings – Part 4: Calculation methods, and the CSN 73 0540 - 2/2007, Thermal protection of buildings – Part 2: Requirements.

Composition of a FATRAROOF THERMO (MW) roof deck

The composition is based on our expertise and was tested by PAVUS, a.s., Veselí nad Lužnicí, Czech Republic, on ‘Roof behaviour in external fire’ (test certificate AO 216). The tests were conducted in accordance with the CSN EN 13501-5 and the system is classified as BROOF (t3) for a roof slope of up to 10°. The roof deck composition is also suitable for fire hazard environments.

The intended area of application is of great advantage, in particular, on large roofs of manufacturing facilities or commercial buildings. The roof deck need not be divided into fire safe sections (1,500m²) and an identical composition may be used across the entire roof area, without having to create any dividing 2-m wide bands.

The thermal insulation quality meets the requirements of current standards, in particular the CSN EN 826 – Pressure stress at 10% compression (70 kPa) and the CSN EN 12 430 – Point load for traffic-free roof decks ≥(500 N). In terms of heat penetration through the structure, the recommended heat penetration coefficient for energy saving buildings with the design temperature of 20°C is U = 0.16 W/m².K.

Another, equally important aspect is the so-called long-term low absorption of thermal insulation mineral wool boards of up to 3 kg/m³ (as per CSN EN 12 087), which is achieved through hydrophobisation of the boards in the entire building.

The certified FATRAROOF THERMO MW roof deck meets all of the above requirements.

Composition of a FATRAROOF THERMO PS (polystyrene) roof deck

FATRAROOF THERMO PS is an alternative to the FATRAROOF THERMO MW lightweight roof deck. MPA Nordrheim-Westfalen, an independent German testing laboratory, assessed the certified composition with the designed thermal insulation for ‘Roof behaviour in external fire’ and classified the product as BROOF (t1) for a roof slope of approx. up to 11°. The tested composition is usable in a fire safe environment (area of up to 1,500 m²).

Lightweight flat roofs with polystyrene insulation

The FATRAROOF THERMO SP roof deck features minimum load on the supporting structure, easy handling on individual thermal insulation boards, easy formation of slopes, space to create traffic corridors on the roof or complete traffic roof decks by simply changing the quality of the thermal insulation boards. All of these operations are in conformity with the general structural requirements set out in Directive 137/1998 Coll. issued by the Ministry for Regional Development.

Both certified compositions are part of the FATRAFOL and FATRAROOF roof systems – sandwich solutions. The vast majority of accessories and auxiliary materials used within the system are manufactured by Czech companies and are mutually compatible. Valid certificates have been issued for all system components.

The availability of the complete product range to contractors and building companies is guaranteed by Fatra,a.s., Napajedla, the system sponsor. The products are available in outlets selling the FATRAFOL system.

For the purpose of sustainable development, the system is continually reviewed against both domestic and global trends and upgraded through knowledge from both in-house and external research and development.
